Following the speeches, a documentary by Berkay Kaan Özcan, known as the photographer who shot Turkey's first documentary on the Great Crested Grebe, was screened. Participants had the opportunity to watch a comprehensive visual account of the Grebe's life and the need for its protection.
"Technique, patience, and accurate composition: The three fundamental elements of professional wildlife photography"
Following the screening, Özcan shared his field experiences and the technical and artistic aspects of photography with the audience in a talk. Özcan explained that he works in ambush, using 12-hour waits, camouflage clothing, and camouflage tents to photograph rare species. He explained that this is a discipline that requires patience, meticulousness, and an understanding of nature. He also explained his approach to telephoto lens use, lighting, composition, and eye (perspective) with sample photographs.
Dr. Rıfkı Ünal, a faculty member in the Visual Communication Design Department, served as moderator for the event. During his moderation, Özcan was asked questions about professional photography techniques, narrative language, and composition, providing valuable practical insights for students and participants.
Following the talk and screening, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Berkay Kaan Özcan by Prof. Dr. Samettin Gündüz, with Dean Prof. Dr. Emre Tandırlı in attendance. The event concluded with a group photo with the participants.
This event was invaluable in promoting Turkey's natural riches through photography, raising awareness of biodiversity, and inspiring students with field experience. The Faculty of Communication continues to expand its students' horizons with events that combine art, nature, and science.
